How big are extra-large wall or floor tiles? Large format modern floor or wall tiles are typically larger than 600 x 600 mm, making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms and other areas. However, as manufacturing technology advances, tiles are getting bigger and bigger, and now 800 x 800, 900 x 900, 1200 x 600, and 1200 x 1200 are the standard sizes for projects.
Choosing the proper tile size for your project might be challenging and deciding how large to go. Check out our shopping guide for extra big floor tiles in the section below. It’s jam-packed with helpful advice!
- 1. Is tile size important?
Briefly, the answer is yes.
Your overall design may be dramatically impacted by the tile size you choose. The use of extra big format tiles reduces the number of grout lines, which results in a more basic appearance. Extra-large floor tiles might really give the impression that a room is larger. This is due to the fact that smaller tiles with more grout lines, regardless of the size of your area or room, may make a space seem and feel busier.
Modern floor tiles feature straight or rectified edges, which means there aren’t many grout lines—as little as 3mm. The effect of a continuous floor may be achieved by using grout that is either the same color as the tile or as close to the same color as the tile as is realistically possible. This makes the grout lines seem to “disappear.”
- 2. Budgetary Factors
A 1200 by 1200 mm tile from the same collection will probably cost more than a 600 x 600 mm tile since larger tiles may often be more costly. Although it won’t cost as much as a 1200 1200 mm tile, choosing a “half-way” size choice, such as 900 x 900 tiles, may still offer you a huge floor tile.
Consideration should be given to installation. Consider the mix of design as well as factors like handling and installation to help you make an educated choice. Some tiles truly need a two-man lift, if not more. With exceptionally big floor tiles, in particular, we always advise using the services of a competent and experienced tile fitter.
- 3. What size extra-large floor tile is recommended?
Each of our collections has a big format tile, whether it be an 800 × 800, 900 x 900, 1000 x 1000, or 1200 x 1200 choice, with the addition of a 1200 x 600 option for those who would like a rectangular tile. Even the enormous 1510 x 750mm extra big tile may be found in several of our collections.
Even our wood boards, which are an astonishing 1510 x 240mm in size, are big format.
In our guide below, we’ve examined each tile size, beginning with 800 × 800mm.
800 × 800mm
a wonderful tile size that is substantial enough to seem large format yet manageable enough for installation. Just a little bit bigger than a conventional 600 × 600mm tile, it creates a perfect blank canvas for any area thanks to its corrected tile edges and minimum grout lines.
One of the finest available sizes. Our 900 by 900 mm extra large floor tiles feel substantial and opulent without being too expensive.
As thickness decreases as tile size rise, our super big 1000 by 1000 mm floor tiles are 8mm thick, while the Beat series is really 6mm thick.
It is more crucial than ever to make sure substrates are properly prepared, and tiles are set into a complete bed of adhesive when using thinner porcelain.
This is the size if you’re looking for something really unique.
Since these tiles are somewhat large, considerable thought must be given to their lifting and installation. If you can stretch to it, this is a tough tile size to surpass. Pallets are sometimes considered “oversize,” so there are occasionally extra cost concerns for delivery. It just screams “luxury” in every way.
The majority of our collections use tiles that measure 1200 x 600 mm. If you want the bigger format but don’t want to go all the way to 1200 x 1200mm, 1200 x 600mm is a decent compromise. When it comes to shipping, a 1200 x 600mm is somewhat less expensive than its bigger version since it also ships on a regular euro pallet.
When using rectangular tiles, you must consider both the pattern and the direction in which you run your tiles. You could choose to stack the tiles or stagger them in a brick bond design. In such a case, the overlap shouldn’t be more than 33%.
This is because of the fact that all porcelain tiles, regardless of price, have a tiny curvature along their length of them. If the staggering is greater, you can see lippage, in which the tiles are not flush.
Our porcelain planks in huge sizes are very lifelike. The traditional installation method for broad plank porcelain tiles uses staggered joints. The most realistic appearance and finish resulted from this. It’s crucial to avoid spacing the joints by more than 33% for any tiles with a length of more than 600mm. The suggested maximum overlap is this.
